ScaleUp Radio

Oct 21, 2019

In this episode of ScaleUp Radio, Kevin Brent speaks to Paul Rhodes from Green Gorilla Software, which is a bespoke software company that helps businesses across the UK.

It’s rare that we speak to someone on this podcast who didn’t start with a very definite plan for their career - but that is absolutely the case with Paul Rhodes. No plan, moving from job to job with no real ambition, and it was only a decade or so ago when he became a development manager for a mobile coding company that he saw the scope for what he could do on his own - even though, as you’ll hear, he didn’t have the first clue about running his own business!

In the end, it was that lack of knowledge that caused his first business to go into liquidation. But it’s hearing the lessons that he learned from that challenge that is something that we can all learn from, wherever we are in our own scale up journey.

It’s a fascinating conversation with Paul, which revolves around the four pillars of scaling up. So, we discuss:

How the business strategy changed from Paul’s first to his second company - a smaller team, and moving away from a transactional model with clients.

Why a smaller, more compact group of people can be more beneficial than a large, sprawling team.

The challenges involved in making a 90-day plan for your business, and executing it faithfully so that, as a company, you stick to it.

Know your cash flow. Not just how much you’ve got in the business at any one time, but where is the next bit of cash coming from, how will it be invested in the company and when you would run out of money if no new business came through the doors.
